NASA will launch the first human-like robot to space later this year to become a permanent resident of the International Space Station. Robonaut 2, or R2, was developed jointly by NASA and General Motors under a cooperative agreement to develop a robotic assistant that can work alongside humans, whether they be astronauts in space or workers at GM manufacturing plants on Earth. The 300-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands and will launch on space shuttle Discovery as part of the STS-133 mission planned for September. Once aboard the station, engineers will monitor how the robot operates in weightlessness. R2 joins another station robot, known as Dextre. That robot, built by the Canadian Space Agency, consists of two, long arms to perform tasks that normally require spacewalking astronauts to complete.

While Dextre is located on the station’s exterior, R2 will be confined to operations in the station’s Destiny laboratory. However, future enhancements could allow it to move more freely around the station’s interior, and it could one day be modified to operate outside the complex. The dexterous humanoid robot not only looks like a human, it is designed to work like one. With human-like hands and arms, R2 is able to use the same tools that station crew members use. In the future, the greatest benefit of humanoid robots in space may be as an assistant or stand-in for astronauts during spacewalks or for tasks too difficult or dangerous for humans. For now, R2 is still a prototype and lacks adequate protection needed to exist outside the space station in the extreme temperatures of space.

Testing the robot inside the station will provide an important intermediate environment. R2 will be tested in zero gravity, as well as being subjected to the station’s radiation and electromagnetic interference environments. The interior operations will provide performance data on how a robot may work side-by-side with astronauts. As development activities progress on the ground, station crews may be provided hardware and software to update R2 to allow it to do new tasks. R2 is undergoing extensive testing in preparation for its flight. Vibration, vacuum and radiation testing along with other procedures being conducted on R2 also benefit the team at GM. The automaker plans to use technologies from R2 in future advanced vehicle safety systems and manufacturing plant applications. GM’s manufacturing engineering team is already working to identify potential applications for R2’s array of vision, motion and sensor technologies that will assist workers in manufacturing operations.

Aimed at experienced shooters looking for value and sophisticated SLR performance, Sony today introduced the full-frame a (alpha) DSLR-A850 camera and a new 28-75mm F2.8 lens. The a850 model shares the same 24.6 megapixel sensor and most features of the flagship a900 camera, introduced last year, but will be available for just under $2000 (body only).

Sony is bringing the benefits of a full-frame digital SLR camera to a broader group of consumers,” said Kristen Elder, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. “The a850 strengthens Sony’s alpha DSLR line, which now offers models in each step from high-end professional down to the amateur enthusiast.”

The a850 camera is designed to deliver ultra-fine picture quality with a high resolution, 24.6-megapixel, 35-mm full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor and fast image processing with dual BIONZ processing engines. It also offers high-speed continuous shooting of 24.6 megapixel images at up to three frames per second.

Ultra-Fine Images: The camera’s Exmor CMOS sensor delivers the photographic expressive power of wide angles and perspective that only a 35 mm full-frame sensor can offer, and is designed to take advantage of the resolving power of high-precision alpha lenses. Its high pixel count and large size provide enhanced image detail and a wider dynamic range for natural color reproduction and subtle tonal gradations.

Image processing gets a boost in speed and power from two BIONZ processing engines. Large amounts of data captured by the 24.6-megapixel sensor can be quickly processed to achieve a fast shooting response. Additionally, this dual BIONZ system applies advanced noise reduction algorithms producing images of exceptional quality and detail, especially at high ISO sensitivities.

Capture the Right Shot the First Time: The camera’s innovative intelligent preview function takes the guesswork out of setting up a shot and the hassle of taking multiple shots to achieve a desired effect.

After pressing the depth of field preview button, the camera “grabs” a RAW preview image which is processed and displayed on the LCD screen. You can then fine tune white balance, determine the best level and effect of dynamic range optimization, adjust exposure compensation and check histogram data, all before you actually take the picture. Preview images are not recorded on the camera’s memory card, thus saving capacity.

The camera’s autofocus system features nine sensors with 10 assist points for improved tracking of moving subjects. A center dual cross sensor comprised of two horizontal and two vertical line sensors as well as a dedicated f/2.8 sensor are included to achieve greater precision, especially when using fast-aperture lenses.

On Thursday, Microsoft confirmed the prices for its new line of Zune HD media players making it crystal clear that it is in competition with its rival Apple iPod by costing it lower than them. The price of the Zune HD is $219.99 for a 16GB unit and $289.99 for the 32GB version.

From Thursday onwards even pre orders for the media players also have started by the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant and consumers can order at Amazon.com, Best Buy, Walmart and Microsoft. Microsoft said in a statement, that deliveries of the new Zune will begin Sept. 15, the same day the players become available for sale in stores. The new devices compete drastically in price as well as design with the iPod Touch.

Microsoft stated in May that the new units will feature a built-in HD Radio receiver, high-definition (HD) video output capabilities, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touch screen, Wi-Fi and an Internet browser.

One analyst says that neither features nor price will attract the iPod faithful, but still some have doubted that Zune’s pricing will be enough to encourage the iPod faithful to abandon their Apple units. Earlier week, the details of the Zune HD’s pricing appeared in a leak reported by tech blog Gizmodo. However, Gizmodo’s information about the actual “General Availability” (GA) date for the units was off by a week.

Amazon had put up briefly and prematurely Zune HD pre-order page that displayed the pricing, earlier this week. But was quickly removed before Gizmodo grabbed a screen capture. Later, Gizmodo also acquired screen shots purportedly from within Best Buy that showed what turned out to be the incorrect GA date. Moreover, there were no comments by the Micrsoft spokesperson.

Asus has just unveiled its latest RT-N13U wireless router that will make it a snap to configure right out of the box thanks to the intuitive Asus EZ UI which enables users to set up and manage wireless connections, printers and scanners without breaking a sweat.

Heck, it even comes with the ability to allocate different bandwidth to various activities performed based on user preferences. Another advantage of the Asus RT-N13U would be its ability to support 24/7 downloads without the need for a computer to be left running. No idea on pricing, but the stylish Asus RT-N13U comes with an optimized antenna isolation configuration that allows one to obtain better connectivity and clearer reception.

Logitech just announced its Harmony 900, a universal remote that builds on the work the company did with the Harmony One. The 900 uses the same superb physical design as the Harmony One, but it now supports radio frequency (RF) commands, in addition to infra-red (IR) ones.

Logitech has also added a piano black dock that will charge the remote: that’s a pretty neat idea. That’s not all, Logitech now has in-cabinet IR blasters for users who like to have everything neatly packed and hidden away (like me). Finally, the setup for the remote is fairly easy.
