Research In Motion launched in India on Tuesday two BlackBerry handsets through its distributor Redington. These handsets will be available through retail outlets in line with the company’s strategy since January to launch network-independent phones through Redington, besides its traditional sales through mobile services providers.
The new models launched on Tuesday are the BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Curve 8520. The phones will be available at leading electronic stores in 38 cities, RIM said. These stores are already selling other models of BlackBerry phones, the spokesman said. The move to offer the handsets through retail channels fits better with the way consumers in India like to buy, said a spokesman for RIM in India. Consumers usually pick a handset at retail stores from a variety of brands and models, and then insert a SIM (subscriber identity module) card and get it running, he added.
RIM already has ties with nine service providers in India, including the largest Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Communications, the second largest. After buying a BlackBerry handset from a retail store, the customer will still have to sign up with one of these nine service providers, the spokesman said. RIM offers its handsets through retail channels as well in a few other countries where the model has been found to be relevant to the market, he added.

Eager to pick up a new BlackBerry device? Well, the folks over at BoyGenius have come up with some possible release dates for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 and Curve 8520.
It seems that the Curve should be available on T-Mobile sometime in Q4, while the 9630 Tour should be available on Verizon on July 13th. These aren’t official dates, but hopefully they’re accurate and will give us a guideline as to when the devices will be available.

There’s still nothing official about the BlackBerry Curve 8520, but we’re hearing that the new RIM smartphone will be released by T-Mobile USA sometime in the fourth quarter of 2009. The source of this rumor, BGR, says that a price for the 8520 was not given, but it should be on the affordable side anyway.
Well, a low price point won’t be a surprise given the features of the new smartphone, which include a QVGA display, Wi-Fi, a 2MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 and quad-band GSM connectivity with EDGE. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 also has dedicated music keys and a new optical trackball which, apparently, is just plain awesome.

After trying to to haggle manufacturing partners for lower prices, BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM)-maker Research in Motion is eyeballing new sources to simultaneously ramp up production, according to a recent report.
Foxconn, who is already a big name in the manufacturing game, is the likeliest candidate for a RIM contract, and will probably see continued business if BlackBerry sales keep going as well as they have been lately.
Luxombourg-based Elcoteq, Celestica and plenty of others have been feeding RIM parts for a long time now, but it’s a tough position to be in, both needing to meet higher demand, but cut costs because of a chilly economic climate. Foxconn must be making quite the offer if RIM’s willing to pick them up and not just change arrangements with existing partners.
