Xperia X2 is not the only new phone announced by Sony Ericsson these days. The Swedish-Japanese company has also unveiled, in London, the Xperia Pureness, a handset that looks atypical for the Xperia family - that’s because it has something to do with Sony’s new make.believe brand direction.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness is a phone with a simple design, bringing together “beautiful craftsmanship and the concept of talk, text, time - a holiday from technology.”And to continue with the PR language, the Xperia Pureness “approaches the mobile phone as a work of art rather than technology.” Reportedly, Sony Ericsson’s designers “aimed to sculpt an object of design that reflected the purity of water and a sense of calmness when not in use.”

Sony Ericsson plans to launch XPERIA X2, X3 and X5

Sony Ericsson’s very old news seems to be on June 17, there was this talk about Sony Ericsson announcing its next generation Xperia - the X2. However, the news was a waste as Sony Ericsson hastily cancelled the event of the launch because Samsung (as usual) dropped a bombshell in the form of the Omnia 2 that made Xperia X2’s look low.

Sony Ericsson seems determined to expand its XPERIA mobile phone series and is now reported to have plans of launching no more than three new devices that will fit into the family. The three new upcoming devices are named XPERIA X2, X3 and X5 have been announced to be launched in near future. There were rumors of it to be launched officially on July 17.

XPERIA family is not only adding member to it, but it feels as if it will be expanding to more operating systems than Microsoft’s Windows Mobile that came along with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. The new X2 is preferably on the same platform as X1, yet the X5 is suppose to be newly unveiled Rachael, should come to the market with Android.

The upcoming X3 is reported to be an interesting device as it is reported to be none other than the also recently spotted Sony Ericsson Kiki, which will come to the shelves with a transparent display. There is no X4 in the series yet. The information about the device is unfortunately limited to this. Yet, in case the company is indeed set to announce the handsets as soon as rumored, it won’t be long before more info will be obtained.

The news of the near launch was reveled through Twitter, UnwiredView reports, and no exact details on what the company has in store for us have been unveiled, yet we’re pretty sure that the hopes of a lot of enthusiasts out there are high already. Rachael is not the only one most interesting Android handsets in the market, considering the interface it is expected to come with, but Kiki might also become a popular phone, for its design seems rather mysterious, with no visible buttons on the face cover.

Sony Ericsson today unveiled two new GreenHeart pioneer products underpinning its ongoing commitment to taking a lead on environmental sustainability by driving green innovation that doesn’t compromise on product design and functionality.

The GreenHeart programme launches with two flagship products - the C901 GreenHeart and Naite- plus the MH300 GreenHeart headset, one of the greenest headsets on the market. The GreenHeart concept is a key pillar in Sony Ericsson’s revitalised product portfolio strategy and the sustainable innovations found in the GreenHeart pioneer products will eventually roll out into the broader portfolio.

Both new GreenHeart phones build on Sony Ericsson’s industry leading ‘green core’, the result of a long standing commitment to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals from the product design and manufacturing process.

The first flagship product to be launched, the C901 GreenHeart, will include an electronic, in-phone manual to replace the standard paper version, saving over 90% in paper and reducing the environmental impact of transporting the final product through more compact packaging.

The C901 GreenHeart phone casing is made from a minimum of 50% recycled plastics and includes an optimised display light sensor that uses less energy. The phone is coloured with waterborne paint that lowers exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

The C901 GreenHeart will ship with the MH300 GreenHeart headset, one of the greenest headsets available, made up of 100% recycled plastics in 4 out of 5 hard plastic parts and far exceeding legal environmental requirements.

As well as featuring many of the innovations showcased in the C901 GreenHeart, Naitewill come to market with a low-power charger, the EP300 GreenHeart charger, one of the first of its kind to be introduced to the market. Thanks to these innovations, the overall CO² footprint over the full life of the C901 GreenHeart and Naite is reduced by 15%.

The first GreenHeart pioneer phone, the C901 GreenHeart will also include a WalkMate application, letting users really walk the talk about being more eco-friendly by comparing the steps they take with the equivalent journey travelled by car. And Naite includes an Ecomate application helping users make greener choices in their everyday life as well as a Carbon Footprint Calculator to show you how much CO² you are saving when you walk instead of taking the car.

“Building on the established heritage of our parent companies, Sony Ericsson has worked continuously to become an industry leader in the area of removing harmful substances from the core of its phones and in creating industry leading energy efficiency chargers,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson.

“Today we are announcing the next step in our sustainability strategy - the GreenHeart pioneer products - which launch with two innovative new phones and a commitment to roll out these innovations across the broader portfolio in 2010 and 2011, allowing us to build a more sustainable business.”

Sony Ericsson will use the product innovations in its new GreenHeart pioneer products to ‘green’ its full product portfolio going forward with the aim of setting a new benchmark in sustainability for the entire mobile phone industry. The GreenHeart™ handsets will play a key role in Sony Ericsson’s newly invigorated product portfolio strategy.

For more information on the GreenHeart programme and Sony Ericsson’s overall sustainability commitment, please join us for a global web cast and Q&A at 13:00 (UK time) on Thursday 4th June.

“We are fully supportive of Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart™ initiative because it is so closely aligned with Telefonica O2 UK’s own ambitions to make Sustainability central to our business strategy “, says Bill Eyres, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Environment and Sustainability at Telefonica O2 UK.

“We know from consumer insight that environmental issues, particularly climate change, are now a significant concern for our customers. Furthermore, we also believe that operating more sustainably is a business opportunity, enabling us to function more efficiently and keep the Customer at the heart of all we do. “

“With growing public concern about climate change and increased competition for natural resources, TeliaSonera welcomes more “green” and sustainable choices for our customers like the new GreenHeart phones from Sony Ericsson”, says Indra Åsander, Senior Vice President and Head of Product Management in Mobility Services at TeliaSonera.

“Over the past two years we have seen an increase in “green-behaviour-change” among our customers, such as using more communication services to reduce travel and the resulting CO² footprint. We believe this new initiative to move green behaviour into the mobile manufacturing process is one key step forward for the industry in responding to consumer demand”.

Nardono Nimpuno, Senior Policy Advisor, International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec) added, “The GreenHeart™ project is confirmation of Sony Ericsson’s active engagement in the Chemsec Business Group and their extensive internal work on chemical management.

Through the GreenHeart™ project, with its high ambitions for sustainability and toxic use reduction initiatives, Sony Ericsson is striving for a leadership role in the field of corporate chemicals management.”

Q3 2009 will also see the continued roll out of Sony Ericsson’s global take-back programme which has been in operation since 2007.

By allowing consumers to send back used mobile phones, the programme ensures that they do not end up in landfills but are sent to specialised mobile phone recycling centres. This means that both components and materials are used again, reducing the need to extract and refine raw materials for new products.

In April, Sony Ericsson CEO Hideki Komiyama had commented that the launch for Android based Sony Ericsson phones could take some time. However Peter Ang, VP for marketing Sony Ericsson (Asia Pacific), mentioned that the company is get ready to launch Android 2.0 OS based phones soon, according to a report by Digitimes.

Recently, Android 2.0 firmware was given away on the Internet. Along with this incident, the new ‘Rosie’ interface for HTC phones was also leaked. According to Ang, Ang the Android 2.0 is slated to have more multimedia support that the preceding Android OS.

Ang rubbished the rumors that Sony Ericsson would put a limit on the number of operating systems for their mobile phones. It seems that Sony Ericsson will continue to release Symbian and Windows Mobile based phones along with those featuring the Android OS.

Earlier in February, Sony Ericsson had revealed its Symbian based 12.1 megapixel Idou phone under Entertainment Unlimited, which is its new consumer proposition, at the Mobile World Congress 2009. Now, there are rumors that Sony Ericsson will make another announcement in next week on May 28. This will once again be under its Entertainment Unlimited label. One needs to wait and watch to see if the company will indeed launch its Android 2.0 based phone on May 28.
