LG Fathom VS750 has just been officially announced by Veirzon Wireless – not long after the largest US carrier has unveiled the LG Ally, its newest Android 2.1 smartphone. LG Fathom VS750 is a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 smartphone and, like the Ally, it comes with a 3.2 inch WVGA touchscreen display, and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Unfortunately, the Fathom’s display is resistive, so the handset will most likely not be updated to Windows Phone 7 when this comes out later in 2010.

The Fathom further features EV-DO and HSDPA connectivity (it’s a global smartphone), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.2MP autofocus camera, and a 1GHz processor (not sure if it’s Snapdragon or not). Verizon’ business sales channels will sell the LG Fathom starting May 27, while other channels should get it on June 3. The new smartphone costs $149.99 on contract (after a $100 mail-in rebate) and requires a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and an Email and Web for Smartphone plan.

Of the 500 million odd mobile subscribers in India, around 94% are prepaid, making India one of the world’s larget markets for prepaid topup. According to estimates, every month recharges worth 2 billion USD are sold in India. Most of these are sold through distribution networks created by the mobile carriers. Many attempts are being made to use technology to make this huge logistics chain more efficient. One of the players in the mobile recharge space is mobikwik.com which sells directly to the end user through the web. A customer needs to create an account, make a payment with credit card, debit card or netbanking and get the mobile topup instantly.

Though recharge through internet is convenient, a large section of India’s population do not have access to internet. Mobikwik.com has solved this problem by creating the world’s first recharging system through SMS. Since SMS facility is present in all mobile handsets, this means around 400 million people can now recharge their mobile phones anywhere, anytime. The format of the SMS is very simple: RCamountcellnumber. For example, if a user wanted to recharge 9810598105 with Rs 10, an SMS like RC 10 9810598105 needs to be sent to mobikwik’s cell number ( 9711981981). Currently this service is available only to Indian mobiles.

“Going to a mobile recharge shop is a big hassle, especially for women and elderly since they are either occupied or too infirm to walk. Buying recharge is not like buying vegetables or grocery because the customer need not see, feel or taste the product he/she is buying. All that matters is that recharge should be done correctly. Therefore, mobile recharge is a perfect opportunity to be sold by employing intelligent technology” , says Bipin Preet Singh. Mobikwik.com has managed to create a unique service which is fast, user friendly and might change the logistics of mobile recharge in India.

Microsoft on Monday announced that its Windows phone 7 operating system for mobile phones will be available by this Christmas season, as a whole new platform that incorporates social networking, music, video, photos and games to provide a rich, personalised user experience. At the Mobile World Congress that opened here, Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer unveiled the features that the Windows Phone 7 to be manufactured to specifications laid down by the company, will offer.

The phones will support the capacitative touch interface now popular with users, and revolve around the concept of ‘hubs’ on-screen for people, pictures, office and mail applications, music and video. Making the hubs the core of the navigation system, with dedicated keys for start, search and back – the most frequently used functions – and providing the ability to display configurable individual ’tiles’ on the display screen for the people and applications that matter most to the individual user will differentiate, in Microsoft’s view, the Windows Phone 7 from the personal computer, and other phones.

Thus, a user can feature tiles for individuals, which would show connected activity for them on Facebook, Windows Live and so on. Full-featured synchronisation and integration capabilities with other Microsoft products such as Office, Outlook, the music player Zune and the gaming platform X-Box Live has been built into the new system.
