Currently, to buy a new iPhone 3G from AT&T you have to opt for a service plan of at least $69.99 per month – this includes unlimited data. Of course, the iPhone itself costs only $199.99 (the 8GB version), but after two years of contract with AT&T, you’ll end up paying almost $2,000.

Now the giant US carrier is apparently considering lowering the minimum-required iPhone service plan, from $69.99 to $59.99 – helping users save $240 in two years. According to The Street, the cheaper service plan should be effective starting June, when AT&T and Apple should release the third-generation iPhone.

Well, with Sprint’s Palm Pre coming closer everyday, it’s understandable why AT&T is ready to lower the iPhone service plan. It’s said that the Pre would also be released in June – and it will surely be one of the new iPhone’s toughest competitors.
