Govt lifts ban on pre-paid mobile services in J&K

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

The Centre on Wednesday revoked its ban on pre-paid mobile services in Jammu and Kashmir and instead decided to tighten security checks for handing out such connections. “Pre-paid services will continue in Jammu and Kashmir. However, service providers will meet us in Delhi and give a plan for a more secure (verification) system,” said Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

The Centre’s decision to ban pre-paid mobile connections in the state from November 1 citing security threats had invited strong protests. The ban was imposed in the wake of reports that connections were being handed out without proper verification. The ban had affected nearly 38 lakh pre-paid mobile phone subscribers in the state. National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah had on Tuesday said that the state government had taken up the matter with the Centre and the pre-paid facility would be restored soon.

Government bans pre-paid services in Jammu & Kashmir

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

According to India’s Economic Times, pre-paid mobile services are to be blocked in the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) circle from 1 November. The moves comes on the back of government concerns that such services have been used for criminal and terrorist activities, with the state making the decision after it felt that sample checks on subscriber verification by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) were ineffective.

Justifying the decision, a statement from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) claimed that both service providers and vendors were failing to carry out the correct verification procedures, noting: ‘In some cases, a single person had been issued multiple numbers of connections. The fake documents/identity numbers are also reportedly being used by the vendors particularly, in the case of pre-paid connections.’

It is believed that the government may consider implementing similar bans in other north-east states, as concerns grow about insurgent activity in those areas.

BlackBerry Releases Phones to Retailers in India

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Research In Motion launched in India on Tuesday two BlackBerry handsets through its distributor Redington. These handsets will be available through retail outlets in line with the company’s strategy since January to launch network-independent phones through Redington, besides its traditional sales through mobile services providers.

The new models launched on Tuesday are the BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Curve 8520. The phones will be available at leading electronic stores in 38 cities, RIM said. These stores are already selling other models of BlackBerry phones, the spokesman said. The move to offer the handsets through retail channels fits better with the way consumers in India like to buy, said a spokesman for RIM in India. Consumers usually pick a handset at retail stores from a variety of brands and models, and then insert a SIM (subscriber identity module) card and get it running, he added.

RIM already has ties with nine service providers in India, including the largest Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Communications, the second largest. After buying a BlackBerry handset from a retail store, the customer will still have to sign up with one of these nine service providers, the spokesman said. RIM offers its handsets through retail channels as well in a few other countries where the model has been found to be relevant to the market, he added.
