iPhone OS Push Notifications Undergo Stress Tests

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

iPhone users who have come to acquire a taste for push information on other platforms will be pleased to know that iPhone OS push notifications in the upcoming version of the AP News app is currently undergoing testing by various developers.

Each individual app will come with its own Sounds, Alerts and Badge notifications which can be toggled individually, leading to a wider range of customization options. Guess this would make things more and more complicated for users who have actually picked up an iPhone because it is easy to use.

AT&T to sell the new iPhone with cheaper service plans

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Currently, to buy a new iPhone 3G from AT&T you have to opt for a service plan of at least $69.99 per month - this includes unlimited data. Of course, the iPhone itself costs only $199.99 (the 8GB version), but after two years of contract with AT&T, you’ll end up paying almost $2,000.

Now the giant US carrier is apparently considering lowering the minimum-required iPhone service plan, from $69.99 to $59.99 - helping users save $240 in two years. According to The Street, the cheaper service plan should be effective starting June, when AT&T and Apple should release the third-generation iPhone.

Well, with Sprint’s Palm Pre coming closer everyday, it’s understandable why AT&T is ready to lower the iPhone service plan. It’s said that the Pre would also be released in June - and it will surely be one of the new iPhone’s toughest competitors.

The word on the street is that Apple has specific instructions for its retailers to put all those old iPhone/iPod touch A/V cords on clearance as there’s a new set coming.

AT&T Might Not Like SlingPlayer for iPhone

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Since the iPhone debuted in the AT&T network, the company claimed to have a hard time to cope with the network strain induced by the higher web usage rate of the iPhone’s users.

Now that a Slingbox application exists, AT&T seems to worry that it could push its network over the edge, as video streaming is much more network-intensive than web browsing. Note that limiting the app to WiFi usage is always an option.

Other voices point out that AT&T is working on its own video streaming functionality, hinting that network capacity is indeed sufficient and that AT&T might try to protect some turf here. At the moment, Apple is the one who has rejected the SplingPlayer form the app store, so AT&T is directing questions to them. In the meantime, Apple has not commented on the matter.

At some point, it will be in Apple’s best interest to work with more than one carrier. Competition might force them to confront every carrier’s worst nightmare: become a commodity pipe like DSL providers.

Buy.com starts selling unlocked iPhone 3Gs

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G might be cool and all, but it would be more fun if you are doing it without voiding your warranty. Sadly, Apple doesn’t agree with this and is always ready to unleash its wrath upon those who dare to do it, but with MacWorld - and hopefully a new iPhone - looming in the near future, times sure seem to have changed.

Buy.com is now offering up 16GB “never-locked” iPhone 3Gs that come with genuine Apple-certified warranty and what’s more, these devices can be updated to the latest firmware without the fear of being locked down by the company. But freedom always comes with a price and Buy.com is demanding a hefty $799.99 for it. Wonder what AT&T has to say about this.
