Dolby Laboratories Inc showcased today the first netbook computers incorporating Dolby Headphone technology. The new Lenovo IdeaPad S12 and S10-2 are lightweight, ultraportable PCs that offer an equally enthralling surround sound experience as desktop or laptop PCs.
Dolby Headphone creates a personal surround sound experience through any set of headphones, allowing listeners to feel immersed in the entertainment. It creates up to five virtual speakers in a virtual room. This results in a more natural listening sensation, which improves listening comfort and prevents the listener fatigue that often accompanies typical headphone use. Dolby Headphone works with any PC audio source.
“Dolby is synonymous with rich, multichannel audio, and with Dolby Headphone, we’re proving that small portable products like the IdeaPad S12 and S10-2 netbooks need not sacrifice the entertainment experience for size,” said Mary Anderson, Marketing Director, PC Segment, Dolby Laboratories.
“In designing our new IdeaPad S10-2, Lenovo’s main objective was to provide the perfect balance of size, performance, and cost, and with Dolby Headphone, we’re confident that we are also able to deliver a full entertainment experience,” said Wei Jun, VP, Notebook Business Unit of Lenovo Idea Product Group. “The processing efficiency of Dolby Headphone allows the new IdeaPad S10-2 to process a rich surround sound experience without overburdening the processor and battery life.”
Dolby Headphone technology can be included in almost any product that incorporates a headphone output and can process stereo or multichannel audio, including portable DVD players, PCs, digital TVs, and wireless devices.

Lanyu from Shenzhen, China, has achieved a world’s first with the cheapest netbook across the planet. The eBook LY-EB01 has been price at 666 Yuan (what a devilish bargain at approximately $98 after conversion).
Don’t expect an Intel Atom processor inside though, as this ARM-powered netbook comes with a paltry 266MHz AK7802Q216 processor instead, accompanied by a 7″ 800 × 480 TFT LCD display, WinCE 5.0 as the operating system of choice, Wi-Fi connectivity, 128M RAM and a 1800mAH Li-Ion battery. Guess this is good for casual web surfing and email checking only.

This year, Sony unveiled its Vaio P series known as netbook, but Sony disagreed to it and called it a ‘lifestyle PC’. But Vaio P was a big BOO BOO! As the price of it was $1000 too high for a low powered atom processor with a sleek pocket-size design. Leaving it neither a full featured laptop because of the low powered processor and nor a netbook because netbooks due to its price as currently due to recession it does not sell in that price.
Now, it feels as if Sony is on the perfect path with the new release of its Vaio W series, which looks and works like a netbook from all sides.
The new Sony Vaio W netbooks wil be released in mid-August and will have a 10.1″ display. It wil be priced for just $500. The Vaio W series, just like other netbooks will be powered by an Atom processor, 1GB Ram and Windows XP. 160GB although Engadget notes that one should not expect a SSD option.
The W series netbooks will also sport a 1366 x 768 high resolution LED backlit screen that will make browsing web pages easy with no side-to-side scrolling. The series includes SD card slot, webcam built in and for connectivity there is Bluetooth and wifi too although there is no mention about GPS and 3G.
The netbook race is certain to have a tough competition with the new release of Sony. Although price is relatively high than other netbooks in the market, but its SONY brand matters a lot!

Samsung Electronics today unveiled a variety of new notebook PC products, signalling its commitment to grow its regional market presence in the mobile computing segment. The new premium, high-performance line-up includes five different models from the X and R Series notebook PCs and N Series netbooks that will cater to a wide spectrum of consumers and business users.
“Samsung is well-recognised globally for its design-focused notebook PCs that come with cutting-edge technologies. With this reintroduction, Samsung is now able to provide a complete PC computing solution to our customers and realise our commitment of providing advanced mobile computing designs of the highest reliability and quality,” said Mr. Moon Sung-Hyun, Managing Director, Samsung Asia.
Building on Samsung’s success to date, the company’s foray into the notebook PC market is a strategic move to extend its leadership and propel regional growth in the IT segment. Samsung is already the market leader in monitors and the number two player in A4 laser printer market in Southeast Asia and Oceania. By expanding its IT product offerings to include notebook PC, Samsung intends to tap on the dynamic growth of this region and enhance its presence in the regional IT industry.
Recent consumer research showed that consumer lifestyles and habits have changed significantly in the last few years. Moving away from desktops, consumers increasingly want stylish, compact and light notebook PCs resulting in the popularity of ultra-thin notebooks and netbooks. Samsung’s new line-up matches these needs.
Despite the slowing economy, global notebook PC shipments grew 10 per cent year on year in the first quarter, according to iSuppli. IC Insights’ Integrated Circuit Market Drivers Report 2009 further projects that notebook PC shipments will rise 13 per cent to 156 million systems this year. In particular, Display Search is forecasting a 66 per cent year on year growth in the netbook category to exceed 27 million units globally in 2009.
With its track record in providing the best-in-class hardware and software solutions for optimal performance and its partnership with Microsoft, Samsung is well-placed to capture market share in this growing segment.
“Samsung’s new notebook PCs are a great addition to the market, offering attractive choices for consumers,” said Mr. Dave Fester, general manager of marketing in the OEM division at Microsoft. “Windows software is perfectly matched to each of Samsung’s broad range of notebook PCs to complete the ultimate computing experience for consumers.”
“Samsung’s new range of notebooks bring a kaleidoscope of innovative form-factors, finishes and colour options to consumers who want more personalization in their notebook designs,” said Ms. Rupal Shah, APAC sales director, Intel Technology Asia. “Coupled with enhanced performance and extended battery life capabilities consumers expect with Intel-based processors, these new Samsung introductions will help augment the growth of the notebook market segment in Asia Pacific.”
The launch of Samsung’s new notebook PC line-up into the Southeast Asia and Oceania market will contribute to the company’s targets of doubling its global growth in the notebook PC segment this year and achieving a top five ranking in the notebook PC market in five years. Its computer business is also targeting a compound annual growth rate of 60 per cent through to 2012.
