Lanyu from Shenzhen, China, has achieved a world’s first with the cheapest netbook across the planet. The eBook LY-EB01 has been price at 666 Yuan (what a devilish bargain at approximately $98 after conversion).
Don’t expect an Intel Atom processor inside though, as this ARM-powered netbook comes with a paltry 266MHz AK7802Q216 processor instead, accompanied by a 7″ 800 × 480 TFT LCD display, WinCE 5.0 as the operating system of choice, Wi-Fi connectivity, 128M RAM and a 1800mAH Li-Ion battery. Guess this is good for casual web surfing and email checking only.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled a variety of new notebook PC products, signalling its commitment to grow its regional market presence in the mobile computing segment. The new premium, high-performance line-up includes five different models from the X and R Series notebook PCs and N Series netbooks that will cater to a wide spectrum of consumers and business users.
“Samsung is well-recognised globally for its design-focused notebook PCs that come with cutting-edge technologies. With this reintroduction, Samsung is now able to provide a complete PC computing solution to our customers and realise our commitment of providing advanced mobile computing designs of the highest reliability and quality,” said Mr. Moon Sung-Hyun, Managing Director, Samsung Asia.
Building on Samsung’s success to date, the company’s foray into the notebook PC market is a strategic move to extend its leadership and propel regional growth in the IT segment. Samsung is already the market leader in monitors and the number two player in A4 laser printer market in Southeast Asia and Oceania. By expanding its IT product offerings to include notebook PC, Samsung intends to tap on the dynamic growth of this region and enhance its presence in the regional IT industry.
Recent consumer research showed that consumer lifestyles and habits have changed significantly in the last few years. Moving away from desktops, consumers increasingly want stylish, compact and light notebook PCs resulting in the popularity of ultra-thin notebooks and netbooks. Samsung’s new line-up matches these needs.
Despite the slowing economy, global notebook PC shipments grew 10 per cent year on year in the first quarter, according to iSuppli. IC Insights’ Integrated Circuit Market Drivers Report 2009 further projects that notebook PC shipments will rise 13 per cent to 156 million systems this year. In particular, Display Search is forecasting a 66 per cent year on year growth in the netbook category to exceed 27 million units globally in 2009.
With its track record in providing the best-in-class hardware and software solutions for optimal performance and its partnership with Microsoft, Samsung is well-placed to capture market share in this growing segment.
“Samsung’s new notebook PCs are a great addition to the market, offering attractive choices for consumers,” said Mr. Dave Fester, general manager of marketing in the OEM division at Microsoft. “Windows software is perfectly matched to each of Samsung’s broad range of notebook PCs to complete the ultimate computing experience for consumers.”
“Samsung’s new range of notebooks bring a kaleidoscope of innovative form-factors, finishes and colour options to consumers who want more personalization in their notebook designs,” said Ms. Rupal Shah, APAC sales director, Intel Technology Asia. “Coupled with enhanced performance and extended battery life capabilities consumers expect with Intel-based processors, these new Samsung introductions will help augment the growth of the notebook market segment in Asia Pacific.”
The launch of Samsung’s new notebook PC line-up into the Southeast Asia and Oceania market will contribute to the company’s targets of doubling its global growth in the notebook PC segment this year and achieving a top five ranking in the notebook PC market in five years. Its computer business is also targeting a compound annual growth rate of 60 per cent through to 2012.

The classic iPod Lego Speaker has been given a new coat of paint - two, actually, as they now come in silver and gold metallic colors, retailing for $25 a pop.
Perfect for you to add some much needed bling to your desktop, and best of all is they won’t need any batteries since they’ll act as power vampires, sucking up juice from your iPod when plugged in via USB.

In order to keep up the good name and lead in the business-oriented netbook space, today, Hewlett-Packard Co. announced an updated Mini netbook. The new Mini 5101 Biz netbook has a starting price of $449 and arrives with a brighter OLED screen, a larger, spill-resistant keyboard and a better-resolution 2-megapixel Webcam.
As per Carol Hess-Nickels, director of marketing for business netbooks at HP, the Mini 5101 will also have a slightly faster Intel Atom processor, a new security feature and a higher-quality metal case than the current Mini 2140. The new Mini 5101 will run at 1.66 GHz as it uses Intel’s Atom N280 instead of the six months ago released Mini 2140 that runs at 1.6 GHz N270.
Better than the 2140’s 92% size, the new 5101 netbook will have a flat open key layout will have a MacBook-like look-and-feel, and will be slightly larger, at 95% of full-laptop-keyboard-size. Hess-Nickels said that the 5101 will retain the Mini 2140’s spiffy anodized aluminum case, but add a magnesium metal bottom.
After Acer Inc. and Asus Inc. considering the third leading netbook vendor, HP is among a few vendors to explicitly target business buyers with its netbooks. In less than one and a half year, the Mini 5101 will be the HP’s fourth business netbook. The Mini 2133 was released in early 2008, followed by the much-improved Mini 2140.
In May, a lower-end business Mini netbook, the Mini 1101 was announced by HP. On arrival in late July, the New Mini 5101 will keep up many of the same features as the 2140 such as 2.6-pound weight, a choice of Windows Vista, XP Home or Professional, Suse Linux Enterprise 11 or FreeDOS operating systems (for users to install whatever flavor of Linux they choose); hard-disk or solid-state disk drives with 3D DriveGuard, HP’s technology to protect data in case of drops; a 10.1 inch screen coming in either 1024×600 or 1366×768 resolutions; and a choice of fast-charging 4- or 6-cell Lithium-Ion batteries, the latter offering up to 8 hours of battery life, according to HP.
The Broadcom “Crystal” HD video decoder that enables 720p or 1080p HD video that is available in the just-released $329 Mini 1101 will not be included in it. But if customers are interested in HD video than HP could use Nvidia Inc.’s Ion technology, as Lenovo Group Ltd. is doing.
“We have looked at Ion, and we continue to look at it every time we come out with a new product,” Hess-Nickels said. “Right now, it didn’t seem to be the right offering for our customers.”
In reply to the popularity of Linux as a question, Hess-Nickels replied that the overall percentage of customers choosing Linux on HP netbooks, including business and consumer models, was “probably less than 10%,” though probably “higher, in the mid-teens” for business Mini models such as the 2133 or 2140.
