Motorola Charm is now available on T-Mobile for free or $75, depending on where you buy it
Vlad Bobleanta By Vlad Bobleanta on 25 Aug 10. The Motorola Charm was announced for T-Mobile almost two months ago. Since then, a few things have happened. It was apparently delayed, then slated for an August 25th release (which, as it turns out, was true). There was also some info on pricing, but thankfully that $189.99 price tag turned out not to be true. And, just one week ago, Telus launched it in Canada before T-Mobile did in the US.
But the day when you can get a Motorola Charm on T-Mobile has finally arrived. If you choose to buy direct from TMo, the Charm will set you back $75 (after a $75 mail-in rebate) with a new contract. However, you can currently get it from Wirefly for free with a $59.99 per month contract. Strangely though, if you already have a T-Mobile contract, Wirefly will sell you the Charm for $50, and you’ll still have to renew your service agreement.

The Sony Ericsson PSP phone is probably the only mobile product in history to have been rumored for a longer period of time than the Apple iPad. That’s no small feat to accomplish. And while the PSP phone of 2007 is clearly a dead project, the rumors have started again. This time, there are many details, so this actually has a good chance of being true.
It goes like this. Sony Ericsson are hard at work developing a gaming platform on top of Android 3.0. This will come with its own ecosystem and, apparently, a device. The phone is described as being a cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go.

LG is adding three new devices to its army of touchscreen featurephones, all part of the just-announced Wink Series: LG Wink T300, LG Wink Style T310 and LG Wink 3G T320. Reportedly designed to meet the demands of young users (the so-called Generation Z), the LG Wink phones come with wide social networking support, customizable interface, “intuitive and easy-to-use virtual QWERTY keypad”, “enhanced music functionality” (including FM radio and 3.5mm headset jacks), 2MP cameras, and MicroSD card support.
The LG Wink T300 is the smallest of the series, featuring a 2.4 inch QVGA touchscreen display – which LG dares to call “generous”. LG Wink Style T310 has a 2.8 inch display and is touted as “one of the most fashionable full-touch phones on the market”. LG Wink 3G T320 obviously features 3G connectivity, plus push email and a display that seems to have 2.8 inches. The recently seen LG T325 is a version of it.
All LG Wink phones will be available starting August in Europe and the Middle East. Other markets – Latin America, Asia (including China) and the CIS – will get the phones later in Q3.

While LG’s mobile division is losing money, Samsung has announced that its Mobile Communications Business reported an operating profit of 630 billion won ($532.98 million) for the second quarter of 2010. Samsung sold 63.8 million phones during the quarter – a 22% increase compared to Q2 2009. 30% of the handsets sold were touchscreen-enabled: this means about 19 million Samsung touchscreen phones were shipped worldwide during the quarter.
For Q3 2010, Samsung plans to further increase its smartphone / touchscreen phone market share. The Galaxy S (running Android) and the Wave (running Bada) series have both been successful until now and they’ll surely help Samsung make a lot of money. Both the Wave S8500 and the Galaxy S are already available in lots of important markets around the world. The Galaxy S is bound to be a major hit especially in the US, where all four major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) are carrying different versions of it.

Good news regarding Android fragmentation. More and more devices are running Android 2.1. And while that isn’t the latest version, it’s still in a whole different class compared to 1.6 or 1.5, which at this point should really be on the way out. That is, of course, unless phone manufacturers insist on bringing other new Android 1.6 devices to market. Google should still probably impose an end-of-life for each version, to prevent its hardware partners from releasing products with obsolete versions of the OS, but the situation seems to be more or less taking care of itself, albeit very slowly.
55.5% of Android devices are currently on 2.1. Only 3.3% are on Android 2.2 (at this point, that’s only the Nexus One). 1.5 and 1.6 together still represent 41% of the total, but at least they’re not the majority anymore. Android’s version fragmentation issue is very real, there’s no denying that. However, given time, the situation might not be as bad as some anticipated. The true test will be in Q4, when the next version of Android is due out. 1.5 and 1.6 will clearly still be around, and then the charts have the potential to become a lot more messy.

Nokia has released an early build of MeeGo for handsets (call it a pre-alpha version, if you will), thus keeping its promise made last week. This version of MeeGo that’s available today is a work in progress: the APIs are not stable and some components (including Web Runtime, APIs and optimizations for TI and Intel Atom chipsets) are missing. However, the build includes a Touch UI framework, Qt 4.7 with Qt Mobility API 1.0, and early versions of the core application suite – so developers interested in MeeGo can go ahead and give it a try (on the Nokia N900 or the Aava Mobile). Detailed info on lots of MeeGo projects can be found at this official webpage. Downloadable files, including the early build of MeeGo 1.1, are accessible here.
